Using Custom Domains Responsibly (Privacy, Cookies, and Consent)
Custom Domains let your reel links load on your own web address instead of a play.reelcrafter.com URL. This article explains what Custom Domains do, what they don't do, and how privacy is handled when you use them. For setup steps, see Custom Domains.
What a Custom Domain does
A Custom Domain:
- Routes your share links through your own domain.
- Makes your reels look more branded and professional.
- Can act as your primary website when you point your root domain at a reel.
A Custom Domain does not:
- Host a full website. It only points to an existing reel.
- Let you add forms, tracking, or other tools to collect visitor data.
Cookie banner
ReelCrafter handles any cookie banner required for the analytics it collects. If one is needed, it appears automatically on reels served from your custom domain, so you don't need to add your own.
Privacy notice
ReelCrafter's standard privacy policy link appears on reels served from your custom domain, covering the analytics we collect. You don't need to add your own privacy notice today.
Who is responsible for visitor data
ReelCrafter collects the same engagement analytics on a custom domain as it does for any reel: plays, completions, clicks, downloads, device types, referrers, and a general location based on IP address. We act as an independent data controller for this data and handle compliance on our side. What you see in your dashboard depends on your plan: Professional includes the detailed analytics, Starter shows opens and general location, and Free doesn't include reel analytics.
Because you can't add tracking, forms, or other data-collection tools to a Custom Domain, using one does not make you a data controller for visitor data. You don't need to take any additional privacy or consent steps to use a Custom Domain for your reels.
This changes only if we introduce features that let you collect visitor information on your Custom Domain. At that point you would be the data controller for anything you choose to collect, ReelCrafter would act as your data processor, and we would provide a Data Processing Agreement (DPA). We'll explain your responsibilities clearly if and when that happens.
What ReelCrafter does and doesn't provide
ReelCrafter currently provides:
- The same reel analytics your plan includes for visitors to your Custom Domain (plays, completions, clicks, downloads, device types, referrers, general location based on IP address).
- Any required cookie banner, plus the privacy policy link, on reels served from your custom domain.
ReelCrafter does not currently provide:
- Tools for collecting visitor contact information.
- Ways to add your own tracking or analytics scripts.
- Custom code injection or third-party integrations on Custom Domains.
