Using Custom Domains Responsibly (Privacy, Cookies, and Consent)

When this feature becomes available, your reel links will be able to load using your own domain instead of a ReelCrafter URL. This article explains how Custom Domains work and what to know about privacy when using them.
What a Custom Domain Does
A Custom Domain on ReelCrafter:
- Routes your share links through your domain
- Makes your reels appear more branded and professional
A Custom Domain does not:
- Host a full website
- Add privacy notices or cookie consent banners automatically
- Collect visitor data on your behalf
When You Become a Data Controller
ReelCrafter only collects basic engagement analytics on your reels. For this data, we act as an independent data controller and handle compliance on our side.
Right now, using a Custom Domain inside ReelCrafter does not make you a data controller for visitor data, because you cannot add tracking, forms, or any other data-collection tools.
In the future, if we introduce features that let you collect visitor information on your Custom Domain, we will clearly explain what your responsibilities are at that time. Until then, you do not need to take any additional privacy or consent steps to use a Custom Domain for your reels.
Cookie Banner
Since you cannot add tracking tools or custom scripts today, no cookie banner is required.
Privacy Notice
Since you cannot cannot collect visitor data today, no custom privacy notice is required.
What ReelCrafter Does (and Doesn’t Do)
ReelCrafter currently collects:
- Analytics about visitors to your Custom Domain (plays, completions, device types, referrers)
- We act as an independent data controller for this collection
- You see only aggregated analytics in your dashboard, not raw visitor data
ReelCrafter does NOT currently provide:
- Tools for collecting visitor contact information
- Ways to add your own tracking or analytics scripts
- Custom code injection or third-party integrations on Custom Domains
If we add built-in data-collection features in the future:
- You will be the data controller for any information you choose to collect
- We will act as your data processor for those features
- We will provide a Data Processing Agreement (DPA)
